Tammy Greenstein and Doris Muramatsu met in the second grade and have been performing together as the urban folk duo "the garden verge" since 1996. The garden verge's debut CD, Shadow of a Habit, won the 2002 Outmusic Award for Outstanding New Recording by a Duo, Group, or Band, and was chosen as one of May's "Top 12 DIY Releases" by Performing Songwriter magazine. Nate Borofsky is an acclaimed solo artist who won the Boston Music Award for Best New Singer-Songwriter in 2001. Due to a series of housing complications, the three musicians ended up renting an apartment together in Brooklyn last year. "It was a hey, you-got-your-chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter situation," explains Tammy. "We immediately began to sing in a soprano/alto/tenor configuration." Realizing that they were on to something big, the garden verge and Nate Borofsky joined forces and became Girlyman.
