The Miller Information Commons (MIC)
integrates the resources of a traditional library with a wide range of
advanced technologies including online databases and full-text journals.
The building's interior echoes the cherry paneling, comfortable chairs,
and small, quiet spaces for reading and studying that were features of
the libraries in old private homes of the neighborhood, but the facility
also includes multimedia labs, wireless networking, and electronic classrooms.
The building was named to honor Robert and Holly Miller, whose generosity
made it a reality.
Truex, Cullins & Partners Architects won the Hertzel Pasackow Award for significant contributions to the physical or architectural quality of downtown Burlington for their design. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on May 2nd 1997 and the building was completed on April 30th 1998.

ABOUT THE LIBRARY COLLECTIONS AND SERVCIES
The Champlain College Library is the academic center of the campus, providing resources, services, and comfortable spaces for research, study, and collaborative work. The Library offers a mix of electronic and
print resources to support the academic and research needs of students,
faculty, and staff. The collections include print books and periodicals,
electronic books, microfilm, videotapes and access to an extensive collection
of full-text electronic journals.
Reference service and research support is available to Champlain students in person, by phone, or via e-mail. As part of a new initiative introduced in Fall 2007, chat-based reference is also offered during evening hours. Librarians will work with students to identify print and online sources that support their paper topics for class assignments, and also to identify ways to evaluate and cite sources.
Library instruction is available for all Champlain classes. Faculty should
contact a librarian a week in advance to discuss what kind of instruction
will be most helpful for students in their course. The library website serves as an important starting point and research tool, connecting
users to online resources, selected research links, other library web
sites and online catalogs and reference databases.
The Library has a collection of historical materials relating to Champlain College that may be accessed by speaking with the archives coordinator, whose office is located on the ground floor of the Miller Information Commons.
Six group study rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors may be reserved up to 24 hours in advance for group use. Five single-person quiet study rooms on the ground floor are available on a first-come first-served basis.
Laptop computers are available for student groups to use within the MIC for up to four hours. When not reserved, they are available on a first-come first-served basis. Computers on the 1st floor are equipped with web browsing software and are intended for library research use. Computers on the Lower, 2nd and 3rd floors are equipped with application software for general purpose use; login is required.
Academic s tudent services including the Writing Lab and the Math/Accounting Lab are also located in Miller Information Commons--you can find them on the second floor. |
