Chapter 1 Notes by Steven Grindle
Classifying the type of measurement is important also. Four levels of measurement are: nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio. There are subtle distinctions between the data types but the type we will use for the majority of this course is ratio.

Choose the appropriate measurement level.
#13 Numbers on the shirts of marathon runners
are nominal because the numbers are labels and cannot be ranked or used for any mathematical purpose.

#15 Social Security Numbers
are nominal because the numbers identify individuals. SSN's cannot be ranked and do not serve any mathematical purpose.
#17 The years of Cicada emergence 1936, 1953, 1970, 1987, 2004
are interval because the difference betwen the numbers is meaningful but the ratio and the zero point are meaningless.
#19 Movie ratings of 1 star, 2 stars, 3 stars
are ordinal because the ratings can be ranked but no mathematical operations are meaningful.
