7-4: Estimating the Mean of a population

t-distributionThe Greek letter μ ( pronounced "mu" with a long u) is the symbol that represents the mean of a population.

To estimate μ, use the t distribution pictured above and tabulated in Table A-3, page 614 and the appropriate formulas.

The mean measures the center of the data in a population. The following examples illustrate when it might be useful to know a mean.

Examples of when it might be useful to know a mean:

What is the mean body temperature of healthy people?

What is the mean salary of college graduates?

What is the mean weight of cereal per box?

What is the mean cost repairing Dodge Vipers involved in collisions?

Technique to be learned: Based on the mean, x bar, the mean of a sample of a sample of the population, calculate an interval in which we are confident that the mean, μ of a population exists.
