7-2: Estimating the Proportion of a population
The English letter p is the symbol that represents the proportion (or rate or percent) of a population.
To estimate p, use the z distributionpictured above and tabulated in Table A-2, page 612, 613 and the appropriate formulas.
The proportion measures the fraction or percent of outcomes (usually called successes) in a population. The following examples illustrate when it might be useful to know a proportion, rate or percent.
What proportion of students at Champlain College who favor gun control?
What percent of Democrats in Vermont are undecided about who should be the next Democratic candidate for president?
What rate of defects occur in products manufactured by a factory?
Technique to be learned: Based on the proportion,
of a sample of the population calculate an interval in which we are confident that the proportion, p of the population exists.
