6-3 Applications of Normal Distributions
Any normal probability distribution can be transformed into a standard normal probability distribution using the z formula, so that you can use Table A-2 to look up probabilities to solve problems.
The method for solving problems goes like this if you are given the values of
x,
μ and
σ.
- Identify x, μ and σ
Compute z using the z formula.
- Lookup the probability associated with z in Table A-2 or STATDISK.
- Use that probability directly or indirectly to answer the original question.
Or if you are given a probability value instead of
x, use the following steps
- Identify μ, σ and the probability value
- Lookup the z associated with the probability value in Table A-2 or STATDISK.
Use this formula to compute x.
- Use x to answer the original question
