Assignments and due dates for each chapter are announced in class. Typical problems include:

5-2 page 203

2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16

Don't compute the mean or standard deviation for problem 10

5-3 page 214

6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 26, 28, 30, 32

Use 95% and Table A-1 or 94% and STATDISK for problem 32)

5-4 page 221

2, 4, 6, 8, 14, 18

5-2 Random Variables
Key concepts include discrete random variables and continuous random variables on page 195, the requirements for a probability distribution on page 193, the round-off rule on page 199, the range rule of thumb on page 199 and the rare event rule on page 201.
Do not use formulas 5-1, 5-2, 5-3 or 5-4 on page 198 to compute the mean and standard deviation. We will use the formulas 5-6, 5-7 and 5-8 on page 219 instead. We will not use the formula for the expected value on page 202 either. We will use formula 5-6 on page 219 to compute the expected (or mean) value. The example on page 220 is a great example.
